What is naturopathy?
- A science and an art
- Treats you as a ‘whole person’ – you are greater than the sum of your parts!
- Works with your body’s innate healing ability
- Uses a pro-active ‘preventative’ philosophy – preventing illness and keeping you in optimal health
What is it all about? What does a Naturopath actually do?
The philosophy behind the practice of Naturopathy is that your body has innate healing power. It is the job of the Naturopath to stimulate this power, and return you to full and robust health as quickly as possible.
If you experience any of the symptoms on the list below, or want to improve your health generally, a Naturopath can help you.
- Weight loss
- Detoxification
- Energy
- Fatigue
- Digestive issues
- Skin problems
- Stress
- Immunity
- Insomnia
- Reproduction – male and female
- Headaches
- Memory and concentration
- Colds and Flu
- Allergies
What medicines does a Naturopath use?
The Naturopath has many ‘tools in their kitbox’ to harness that innate power. Using natural medicines such as herbs, nutrition, massage, lifestyle adjustments, Homeopathy, Bach Flowers and iridology, the Naturopathic approach aims to provide the ideal conditions in which your body can completely heal.
The Naturopath is also acutely aware that you are a ‘whole person’ - in other words you are greater than the sum of your parts – and are treated as such. You are more than just your sore big toe! Or whatever other part is in pain and has drawn you to see a Naturopath.
What will happen?
First, symptoms are addressed. This relieves you of the most immediate challenge of pain, discomfort or other symptoms.
What techniques do Naturopaths use?
- Nutritional and lifestyle assessment and advice
- Herbal medicines
- Nutritional supplements
- Massage
- Homeopathy
- Bach flowers
- Iridology
- Testing such as VLA, individual nutrient testing, pathology testing
- Time – to address all your health concerns
To be able to do this accurately, a detailed personal health history is taken and an initial test called bioimpedence analysis is performed, providing an important insight into how your body is responding to your current lifestyle. This test is pain-free, effective and quick and extremely useful to paint a picture of what is going on inside your body. The results of this test are available to you on the spot and a printed report is yours to take home.
By this stage the Naturopath will have a comprehensive picture of your health and will move forward into prescribing to relieve your symptoms.
Next we look deeper to find out what has caused your symptoms. This may involve further testing, depending on your symptoms and how long you have been experiencing them. Tests might include blood, urine or stool testing. A bioimpedence test is carried out again so the naturopath can see how well the prescription is working for you from our previous consultation. This will also indicate what the next step should be to address the cause of your initial symptoms
The final step is to ensure you are on the path to wellness that will provide maximum potential for you to remain symptom-free. A plan is agreed on, one that is compatible with your life and it’s demands. Monitoring at this level of health is usually on a 2 -3 monthly basis.
The patient and naturopath work together
At all stages of this process it is important that you and the Naturopath are in agreement with regard to the suggested treatment. Whilst taking guidance from the Naturopath, it is vital that you, as a patient, step up to the responsibility of caring for your health. The Naturopath in return will do their utmost to care for you in an honest and nurturing environment. This is the way forward to on-going wellbeing, keeping you well now and for the future.
